The Peninsular War, in Portugal, Spain and France, had a profound effect on European history, altering the strategy employed by Napoleon and his antagonists across Europe. The war provided Britain's only way of attacking Napoleon on the continent.

The Peninsular War Resource covers the history of the war from 1808 to 1814. It also contains a summary of European history from 1789 to 1820 and a timeline of events in the Iberian Peninsula up to present times.

The purpose of the site is to provide for hobbyist and researcher alike, a resource to obtain information on a particular subject, with links to further reference material.

Any suggestions which you think will improve the site or any information which could be added to the site will be gladly received.

The architecture of the site has changed considerably, influenced by the way we do our research. Consequently every entry on the site has at least one reference, be it a document or electronic.

The 'Battles' and 'Commanders' sections have been kept for convenience but other material can only be accessed by searching. The simplest search is by keyword and the number of keywords used is extensive. Also the search recognises alternative spellings, so whether you use 'hussar' or 'hussars' or 'Husares' or 'Húsares' or 'Husaros' or 'Hussards', you will still end up with the the same list of references.

There is also and advanced search which offers a much more extensive range of searches including, keywords, text search, categories, by date or date range etc. You must login using an email address to access this search as the system uses this address to store saved searches. The email address will only be used, by us, to send you a 'forgotten' password! It will not be passed on to any third party.

Every electronic reference has a link to the original website. Where possible it will also have the text of the original. The reason for this is that, so often, the links disappear or move. So that the information is not lost, a text version is supplied. This version does not contain any pictures, references or any other extras which may be found in the original. You should therefore always look at the link to get the full information. All text supplied from the link is acknowledged.

If you wish to continue using the old version of the site please click here. Be aware however that the data on this site will no longer be updated.
